Xiang Lan

...and where is the innocence of art?

“这些都是关于我的纯粹”

Xiang grew up in southern mainland China with his younger sister before moving to New York City to study business at Parsons, The New School. Xiang practiced art at his home studio in South Orange, New Jersey.

Xiang expressed himself through making art. He documented his thoughts and feelings, the raw ones, fun ones, naughty ones, scary ones (...you name it.) Xiang was not a classically trained artist but he practiced art as he found it liberating and joyful.

Just like most of you, Xiang lived on this earth, along with the big mother nature, experiencing the good and bad of humankind. These work are snapshots of him and an invitation to imagination and escape. He was fully aware of the chaos and non-sense but where is that tiny bit of innocence. It's like that 30 seconds of joy we had as a child, which is warm, carefree, and fearless.

Xiang battled Nasopharyngeal carcinoma for more then six years before he was taken from this world at the age of 36, in June of 2023. Xiang was married to his husband, Steven, for almost 10 years. While suffering from years of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Xiang never gave up hope. He often created and sent cards to people dealing with severe illnesses with his art. Xiang volunteer and worked on many design projects for non-profits.

It has become Steven's mission to spread Xiang's art and love by donating net proceeds from art sales to art projects at God's Love We Deliver. God’s Love cooks and home-delivers nutritious, medically tailored meals for people too sick to shop or cook for themselves.
